~ Look What I Found! ~
I was talking to Herr Sigi Wulle on IM and somehow got around to Popeye
the Sailor Man... And I remembered I had made a drawing some years ago and Grandma sent it in to the Kansas City Journal (last publishec in 1942) to some cartoon contest and it got published... I also sent a better one of Wimpy but they didn't publish that one... Anyway I dug it out of my desk drawer, yellowed and almost falling apart... Scanned it in and here it is... Please do not be critical, That pic is 68 years old and I was 9 when I drew it.. And I am a Technician.. not an artist (obviously)... It appeared in the Kansas City Journal on May 24, 1941...

~ Labor Day Monday! ~
~ What is Labor Day All About? ~
The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the US military and US Marshals during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.
The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations.
Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parades. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, water sports, and public art events. Families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer recess. Similarly, some teenagers and young adults view it as the last weekend for parties before returning to school.
Today in Kansas City... Three Major Celebrations in various areas, The Irish Fest in Crown Center, The Santa-Cali-Gon Festival in Independence... The Kansas City Renaissance Festival... And the Etravaganza at the Liberty Memorial as above...

Went to the Price Chopper for a few things yesterday, saw a couple nice sales.... And decided on another spice/fruit cake... I had some dried fruit left and bought a package of walnuts to add to this one... Diced up the dried fruit.. added some Marischino cherries to the mix and a cup of walnuts... Added a cup of apricot nectar... Mixed that all up and VOILA! Had a nice cake in an hour...
That was Yesterday... Went back today to get a can of vanilla frosting and added that and a few cherries for Adornment.. Then Tried a sample.. AND! That cake is GOOD! Better than the last one by far...

~ ˇMás Tomates de la Cama! ~
~ Picked a few Tomatoes from the Side Yard Bed ~
I've been keeping an eye on these ripening tomatoes around the side of the building, picked them before something happens to them.. Beginning to color up nicely, they will be fully ripe in a few days... See that one, top left, was green a couple days ago... I used all of the ones from the pot to make salsa picante yesterday... Those will go for something pretty quick...
I had picked three nice ones here from the part of the plants that the deer didn't eat... It took some time for the plants to catch up and start producing again... But this bed was late in producing last year too... So, a total of nine from there so far and another 40 on there looking good.. or even better

~ ˇMás Chiles Conservadas en Vinagre! ~
~ Pato Packed another half-Pint of Pickled Peppers ~
You know what Chile means in Spanish? ~Hot Pepper~... Plain old sweet peppers are called ~Pimientas~... Where they came up with Chili for that dish is another story...
So, not much going on yesterday so I boiled up some water to sterilize a jar and lid, heated up some pickling brine to boiling, poked a couple slits in each pepper, then into the brine to simmer a bit.. then into the hot jar to fill with brine and cap off... Then add to my stash of others in the fridge...
So that makes three half-pints and two pints of pickled peppers from that one $1.79 plant, not a bad price... Though there was some vinegar, salt and pickling spice involved... Gave one jar to my neighbor BJ, Might have to have him help me with another jar , that's enough jalapenos to last me a long time
~ Now What else of No Importance is There to Talk About? ~

~ Even MORE Jalapenos! ~
~ A few more Tomatoes out of the Pot and all of the Latest Jalapenos ~
Well, I didn't pick that green one, it fell off somehow but it will ripen here on the table... and I picked a few more that were almost ripe... Seems they ripen faster after I pick them.. after they have some good color
And then the japalenos were getting big, so I picked all of them off the plant... except one small one... And there still might be more coming... That makes the grand total off that one plant at 60 to date and most have been pickled and in the fridge... Now I wonder if I have another jar for these?
And I snipped off all the Oregano a couple days ago, that has been dried and sealed in the jar... and yesterday I snipped of all the sweet basil again and it is drying in the oven now...
So... looks I am all caught up on the gardening and harvesting to date...
~ But those 50 or so Better Boys in the side yard bed are Coming on Strong Now! ~
"Hi Don,
Thanks for your kind words, and your wonderful blog! My wife and I decided to come back up to Parkville on Saturday afternoon and enjoyed walking around the festival! We had a lot of fun! We both enjoy Parkville a lot..you all have a wonderful town!
Have a great weekend, and we'll be back sometime soon...I hear Frank's has some great Italian food!"
So, back to the tomatoes... And the ones in the pot.. don't look so hot, withering away from something.. Swine Flu maybe? Didn't do so well this year, Didn't keep count but I don't think I got 20 tomatoes off here and they were small.. But OH SO GOOD!
~ Better Boys picked from the Pot ~
Here are seven more I picked from the Pot on Tuesday, will ripen nicely some more on the table.. maybe get a salad or two out of those.. and then maybe 15 or more still on the vine...
Better Boys in the Bed
BUT the Better Boys in the bed are flourishing and I had to tie up a couple stragglers again Tuesday.. And lots of nice sized big ones in there, counted over 35 and still some hiding in there
